Street Fighter 4 Review

By | Capcom, Fan Art, hairy, muscles, rant, Street Fighter, video games, xxx | 6 Comments
Street Fighter IV came out a few weeks ago, and like any die hard Street Fighter fan, I had the deluxe edition on pre-order and have been devoting as much time as I can to intense study of the game.

The Good:
It’s a new Street Fighter!

The Bad:
The roster is too small and the characters’ move lists have been greatly reduced. Both of these were conscious decisions by Capcom to make this game more like Street Fighter 2. They are trying to recapture the Street Fighter 2 fanbase and ignoring fans of the Street Fighter Alpha or Street Fighter 3 series’.

The Ugly:
As a big fan of 2D art forms, I always had my qualms about the main Street Fighter canon going 3D. Indeed, a valiant effort was made to preserve the art style of the older Street Fighter games… but it wasn’t enough for me. The 3D character models are clunky and awkward. Admittedly, some of the 3D models are much better than others. Ryu and Ken (of course) look amazing. But there’s something kinda… doofy about everyone else. Whether its the animation or the model itself, none of them have the grace and elegance of the 2D Street Fighter sprites.

For me, there is a huge disconnect between the beautiful calligraphy inspired promotional art, the clumsy in-game 3D models, and the traditionally animated “Pokemon-esque” story elements in the game.

Obviously an effort was made to link the calligraphic promo art style to the 3D models because here and there the 3D models get what looks akin to a black brushstroke ink outline. But the brushstroke effect is too little and happens too rarely in the game to match the beautiful promo art.

And then there are these weird cartoon cut scenes that look as far away from the promo art and 3D models as you can possibly get. The animation is limited and character design is over-simplified and completely off-model. It literally looks like Pokemon to me. These little mini-toons are supposed to tie-in to the Street Fighter 4 animated movie, done in the same style. Personally, I think they should’ve kept these cut scenes out of the game. It gets too mis-matched.

In previous Street Fighter games, the promo art, gameplay art, and story art all looked like they were done by the same hand. That brought a sense of cohesiveness and gave those games a tight, complete feel.

In conclusion, yah I’m playing it like crazy because it’s a new Street Fighter. But I’m constantly wishing I had more characters and more moves. It pains me to look at a lot of it. I skip the story scenes. Whenever I have to fight Dhalsim, I try to beat him as quickly as possible because I hate that 3D model. What’s wrong with him? Is the head too big or something? He looks like a baby. None of the new characters impress me that much. El Fuerte is welcome, I guess, but kinda… expected. C.Viper I find boring. I mean, come on, ANOTHER female agent character? Rufus is stupid and a little offensive. Everytime I have to fight him, I get sad that so much effort was put into him while E.Honda, the original fat guy of the series has been totally ignored.

Abel is cute… sometimes, but again, somewhat yawn inspiring. His outfit is lame, he’s got redundant moves, and his personality puts me to sleep. It’s a good thing he has that alternate singlet outfit or else he would have never made it to my sketchpad! hehe! Enjoy this drawing and the raunchy NUDE, ERECT rollover version. (Oh, and sorry Doug. He’s French and French people don’t circumcise.)

Black History Month: Bishop

By | Fan Art, Marvel, muscles, rant, wet, X-Men, xxx | 10 Comments
I wanted to do something for Black History Month… yunno, but this is like… a gay art blog. I’m not gonna draw Thurgood Marshall naked. Even I have limits. So, I thought I’d concentrate on something in contemporary black history– specifically black fictional characters. I think black fictional characters are relevant to mention in a discussion about black history. So let’s talk about my dude, Bishop.

Bishop was introduced in the pages of X-Men in 1991, into a comic industry that really did not have many black male characters to speak of. Luke Cage and Black Panther were virtually unknown to comic goers at the time. X-Men was riding a wave of sudden popularity around the time Bishop first appeared and joined the team making him the most visible black male superhero in the 90’s.

I’ll assert here that Marvel has made a concentrated effort to de-emphasize the character in the past few years. Slowly but steadily, Bishop was written out of the books starting in the late 90’s, early 2000’s. He appeared here and there but was not as much of a regular recurring X-Men team member. The final nail in the coffin was Marvel’s “Civil War” and “Messiah Complex” which essentially vilified the character.

Anyone who’s followed the character’s history knows that the story Marvel’s created to turn him into a villain is specious. The only way they’re able to get away with it is because comic readers today did not read X-Men in the early 90’s. Also, Marvel’s not worried about its responsibility to include positive black male characters because it’s pushed Luke Cage and Black Panther to the forefront as of late.

Too bad for Bishop fans though. You’ll have to just suck it up and accept that no one cares about one of the most culturally important characters of a generation. WELL, I still care about him! I care enough to draw him sexy and naked! Roll over the above image!

My New Home… Someday

So I was in Barcelona for 8 days! Amazing vacation. I always used to say, I could never permanently live anywhere but New York. But now, I can add Barcelona to that. Barcelona is a very metropolitan city. It’s almost as diverse as New York, has awesome public transportation, and all the amenities of a thriving major city. The architecture, both old and new was amazing and the public spaces, like the parks and such, were just immaculate.

The best was the boys. Dude… boys and men in this city are ridiculously hot. I’m not exaggerating at all. They are so my type… olive complexion, hairy chests, crew cuts, sideburns, 5’o’clock shadows, and since they love football (soccer) so much, they’re all fit. Like even the “average” guys were hot by my standards. I don’t know how it’s possible. But all their faces seem to just have everything in the right place, ya know!? haha.

Negatives: 1) everyone smokes. 2) Catalan totally sounds like lispy Spanish. I can’t say “grathiath” (gracias) with a straight face. 3) they think the mullet is cool. No lie– 75% of all the young people there had some form of mullet. It’s like– in style. wth?

I’m TOAD, Mafakka!

So, I have been playing MarioKart Wii. Remember, I vowed not to buy any Mario games that didn’t include my boy, Toad as a playable character. Well, he’s in it and is once again an excellent competitor. I kinda can’t stand his voice though. Why do they make him sound like such a tool? And I don’t like how he doesn’t get legs. What’s that all about? Ok, I realize in his first game as a playable character he was a sprite swap of some guy in baggy pants and a turban. But what if us old school purists liked that Toad best?!

Ultimate Gay Fanboy

By | rant | One Comment
Hey guys, I started another blog: Ultimate Gay Fanboy. I was tempted to write a review of Speed Racer because I didn’t agree with all the specious negative reviews it’s been getting. But I didn’t know where to post it. So, I decided to create a new blog to post my reviews of things of interest to us gay fanboys out there. Please visit the new blog, and feel free to give your opinions of the material I choose to review! Thanks for your support, guys!

UPDATE: That blog is no more. Read the review below:

The recently released Speed Racer movie has proven to be one of the most accurate adaptations cartoon to film I’ve ever seen.
The cartoon is from the late 60’s and is originally Japanese and then ported over to United States where it enjoyed quite a bit of popularity. It’s basically about a teen race-car driver, his family, and their adventures unraveling sinister plots to eliminate him from races and/or steal his amazing car, the Mach 5. As a child of the 80’s, I had seen Speed Racer in reruns and remember thinking it was a little difficult to watch just because it felt dated. The stories seemed corny and the animation was sub-par compared to what I was used to. It wasn’t until much later, when I became a student of animation, that I began to appreciate Speed Racer. In the 90’s the cartoon resurfaced all over cable and grew a large cult following because of it’s “kitsch” or “camp” value. It’s chock-full of unintentional innuendo.

The Wachowski Brothers‘ film adaptation translates the original cartoon almost exactly. The plot feels totally lifted from an episode; from the outlandish villains and their ridiculous schemes, to the side plot of the annoying little brother and his pet chimp. The actors all look like character designs from the cartoon. The wardrobe is exactly the same, if not very similar. There is a scene where Emilie Hirsh is wearing Speed’s outfit right down to the red scarf. Even the show’s signature “suggestive gasps” made it into the movie. The only thing that is changed is the high-tech set design, which looks like BladeRunner dipped in a LisaFrank color palette.

That aspect, however, the color palette, is one that must not be ignored when talking about this film. To say that it’s over-the-top is almost an understatement. Bright, vibrant colors, lights and animation dominate the movie from start to finish. This look felt most appropriate during the action scenes but in carrying it throughout the film, they really succeed in creating an entirely different world. It’s stylized to the point where one might even call it experimental. Absolutely nothing about the look of this film is realistic. Ever.

This is precisely what I enjoyed about Speed Racer. They took a cartoon, and made the film version as “cartoony” as possible without animating the entire thing. More films that take their source material from a cartoon, comic book, or video game need to take this approach. Not everything has to be applicable to real life. I believe filmmakers do a great disservice to these original works when they’re modified to be “believable.”

I found Speed Racer to be visually engaging for the entire 2 hours I was there. There are times when it drags (the non-action scenes) but overall, I had a really good time. For the first time in quite a while, I felt like someone with an imagination was behind the scenes. I don’t doubt that these guys painstakingly watched every single episode of that cheesy cartoon (cringe-inducing as that sounds.) I feel like it’s important for the filmmaker to know his source material– and know it well. I respect and applaud the Wachowski Brothers for taking the time to really study the original.

My recommendation is that anyone who is a fan of the original series should definitely see it. Also, artists (particularly animators and illustrators) should give it a try because it’s a great exercise in visual art. If you do not like the original cartoon, do not like cartoons in general, and are more a fan of realism in movies, this film is not for you.

Tunnel Vision

I’m proud to announce that I was recently chosen to contribute a piece for TimeOut New York! TimeOut is a comprehensive arts and entertainment resource found on newstands as a printed magazine and on the web at TimeOut.com/newyork .

The piece is for their “horny” issue in which the features are more sex-related than usual. The article I appear in is entitled “Musée d’Horné,” on Page 16 of the printed magazine and can be found online here. Basically, they got 5 local artists to submit a sexy piece and then got a panel of sexperts to judge each pieces’ effectiveness.

The three panelists who judged my piece are: Pet Silvia, Legs Malone, and Billy Eichner. You can click each of their names here to be taken to their sites… just to have a bit of background on their credentials. ^__^

And by the way, as a friendly response to one of the comments: The very same day this issue came out, I was on a crowded train and was treated to one of the more blatant displays of public affection I’d ever seen. The girl was in a summery skirt, no underwear, and the boy was in sweatpants, also no underwear. They were looking around nervously but noted only me watching so they totally started to go at it. They began making out– heavily. He sucked her neck while she fondled him through his pants. When he got visibly hard, he looked around again to see if anyone was paying attention. Naturally, I continued to stare, with a bit of a “wtf” expression on my face. This (I think) prompted the young couple to get off the train at the next stop. Also, this very same issue of TimeOut has an article about how NYC is a public sex wonderland.

Top 10 Video Game Songs

By | Capcom, music, Nintendo, rant, Street Fighter, Top 10, video games | No Comments
I’ll be scrolling through my albums on my mp3 player and when people see me go through my game soundtracks, they’ll see the original game covers and get all wide-eyed like, “wow– do you have all those games on your iphone?!?” And I smile and say, “no– just the music!” And then they give me a weird look and back away slowly. What can I say? I LOVE GAME MUSIC!

10) Act 1 (Ms. Pac-Man)

I always thought this tune was a little too jazzy and dramatic for the love story of two yellow circles.

09) T.Hawk (Super Street Fighter 2)

He was my least favorite guy in that game– but I loved his theme. MEKSHIKO!

08) Flying Stage (Rocket Knight Adventures)

One of Konami’s best little-known titles, it had a great mascot (very Smash Bros. worthy) and great music throughout.

07) The Ocean (Vectorman)

This one is good with headphones. In this game’s options menu, under ‘music’ it read “click off if you don’t like good music.”

06) Sandopolis Zone (Sonic & Knuckles)

They really get down in old Sonic games, don’t they?

05) Dreamer (Streets of Rage 2)

From stage 3– where you walk around beating the shit out of people at the amusement park.

04) Gemini Man (Mega Man 3)

It manages to be kinda spooky yet super groovy at the same time– definitely the Thriller of NES game music.

03) Begin Treasure Hunting (Kirby SuperStar)

This is here mostly because it is WAY too epic to be in a Kirby game. It sounds like you’re on a grand quest to save medieval Europe.

02) African Mines (Duck Tales)

I used to time Scrooge’s jumping sound to the beat of the music. If he was ever off beat, it was bad luck.

01) Juggernaut (Marvel Super Heroes)

It’s somewhat dangerous for me to walk around with this playing on my ipod because I get so into it that I wanna punch through glass screaming maniacally like Juggernaut’s voice actor.

Yes, I’ve been at work whoring myself out on any and every free web community I can find. I am not in love with the whole social networking racket, but free advertising is always a good thing.

So, if you are on MySpace, DeviantArt, Y!Gallery, LifeOut, or GayWatch, please add me as a friend and spread the word to your friends. I’m not tryna be the next Tila Tequila or anything (especially not with that big ol’ E.T. head of hers) but it will be nice to see the Anti-Heroes holdin’ it down. Thanks!

ADDENDUM (04-28-08): MySpace can choke on my dick and die painfully. I hope Facebook does to Mypace what MySpace did to Friendster. Fascist fucks. (Sorry– when my feelings get hurt, instead of keeping it to myself or whining, I get angry and vindictive.)

As the Tears Flow

A trailer for King of Fighters 12 has been released and it looks so fucking beautiful, it makes me want to sob.

For those that don’t know, The King of Fighters is a long-running fighting game series produced by SNK/Playmore. But what makes KOF12 so hot is that they’ve set out to make the MOTHER of all 2D fighters, redrawing EVERY sprite in HD and upping the animation frame-rate more than double what it was! What I’m tryna say is that the animation is so good, it frikkin’ looks like you’re playing a Disney movie!

This must come as such bad news for Capcom and the Street Fighter 4 camp, who (controversially) decided to abandon 2D for their popular franchise. They thought 2D was dead. Oh, ye of little faith. Part of me feels bad for Capcom because by making the game 3D, they’re competing with the likes of Soul Calibur and Tekken, a battle they’re destined to lose.

SNK/Playmore is basically “running unopposed!” So, kudos to the folks over at SNK/Playmore for believing in 2D and thusly believing in the fans that made their franchise so popular. And Capcom? Well, sorry ‘cuz Street fighter 4’s gonna look like a hot mess when compared to ANY of the other fighters coming out.

Sorry– Another Artless Post!

So, I’m finding that the reason I started this blog (to have an alternative to Y!Gallery) is slowly becoming somewhat moot. Y! is extremely addictive and was easily sucking away hours and hours of my life. But now I’m finding that I’m becoming just as crazy and obsessive about blog land! haha!

Don’t worry though, I’ve no intention of abandoning this blog any time soon. I do however want to say thanks to everyone who stops by and comments and a special thanks to people who’ve been linking this blog to theirs. I think linking is very important on the Internet. It’s the easiest form of advertising one could ask for. As an artist who’s goal is to do gay erotica fulltime, I need all the exposure I can get. And as a supporter of a great number of other gay artists, I am more than happy to return the favor.

Basically, what I’m trying to say is that I want my blogroll to consist of as many gay erotica artists and supporters as possible! And… ahem… it’d be nice if the favor was returned. I mean, we’re all in this for the same reason, correct? We all want this artform to become more widespread and thusly more accepted in the art world and by society as a whole. SO LINK ME PEOPLE! That is all.

Love,
JC, your friendly neighborhood pornographer

End of the Year Musings

So just a few things to announce / rant about for the end of the year. Firstly, I’ve got some new figure drawing up for youze guys!

Here’s Gonzalo, a real he-man with amazingly bulgy muscular meaty thighs and thick luscious sable locks.

The following week was Brandon who was… very very fuzzy. I had some difficulty with this model’s face which is why you’ll notice I didn’t often draw his head. He had very big features and although he was pretty cute, I had trouble rendering a realistic likeness. So, I just made him a cartoon. In truth, I think it suits him better than any attempt at a realistic likeness.

I’m finding more and more by watching some of the other artists in the group that I have a unique way of blending stylization with realism. Most of the other artists there either work completey realistic or totally stylized.
Anyhoo, let me know what yalls think. Tons more are up on my site here.

The next thing I want to mention is that my previous excitement over the graphics for Street Fighter 4 is now gone. 1up.com has footage of some in-game play and I have to say… it just looks very very polygonal to me. I mean… it kinda doesn’t look any more advanced than say Rival Schools or Street Fighter EX.

Call me a purist but think I’ve rejoined the “Street Fighter works best in 2D” camp. I mean… imagine a high-res, super-high frame rate Street Fighter with traditionally hand-drawn animation in the quality of something like Samurai Champloo. Now THAT would be groundbreaking. But when asked in the latest issue of EGM (Electronic Gaming Monthly) why didn’t Capcom just make SF4 entirely 2D, Yoshinori Ono, the game’s lead producer said they’ve “done all they can with 2D” and that they “wouldn’t learn anything new.” Pssh, yeah, way to dodge that question, buddy.

Finally, I’d like to babble on about one more thing. My BIRTHDAY is very close to New Years and all my life, it’s been overshadowed by New Years and to some extent, even Christmas. However, I’m excited about THIS new year because it’s 2008 and 8‘s are my lucky numbers. I was born on 01-08-80 and this year, my 28th BIRTHDAY falls on 01-08-08! So my BIRTHDAY is kindof an anagram of my birthdate! Heh heh!

Oh, and by the way… fan-art makes a great
BIRTHDAY present…. ahem… (cough cough!)
